I have a 1250 that is affectionately called my 1250 Nightmare!

That being said, I love the tractor and paid $400 for it three years ago with a good engine. It needed ISO mounts, steering rebuild and an engine cradle modification. I put on new front tires, painted the white, and changed the Hytran. Currently, it needs a truniton rebuild.

You can expect to do all these things at some point with a Quietline. Still, they are a wonderful tractor. In the condition that you describe, I think $500 is about the top I would pay. But again, if 50 bucks is in the way of a deal, it will be for you to decide how much you want to pay for the enjoyment that you will get back from it.

That's the same answer I keep giving!!!

Recently though, I decided I had enough to keep me busy for a while. I stopped buying....... for now. Point is, you WILL know when you get enough. Some people that number is more than others. I now have 14 (counting parts 4 parts machines) and that makes me happy for now!

1st off, I NEVER negotiate the price of ANYTHING until I'm there to see it in person with ??? much cash in my pocket. This prevents the seller from "thinking" that a deal was already "made" before I ever got there. (but that's just me)

2nd, all we know about this machine is that it smokes a little and it looks pretty decent when wet.

Options can make a difference in price, but what is really huge with a Q/L is, what has been done to it (and if it was done right) and what still needs to be done to it.

It's pretty easy to dump $400.00 - $500.00 into a QL that already has a good engine, $400.00 - $500.00 is just the nickle and dime stuff.

If it needs any real work (or parts) I think $300.00 would be about top dollar... and I live in the land of NO Cubs.

But you gotta go look at it first and decide how much you want it.

When I first got into this crazy obsession with cub cadets there were a few members I would call for advice on how much is this tractor worth, how much for that tractor and so on. They would always give me an answer, but then I would get to thinking, some pockets are deeper than others, so basically it was still my decision in the end if it was worth it to me.
Now it comes down to how bad do I want it, and how much work and money am I willing to stick into one. For me it's not going to be for flipping purposes, that I buy a tractor. I buy a tractor to keep for myself, well intentionally anyway.
So what I'm trying to say is whatever you buy is only worth as much as your willing to spend. I've seen a particular tractor I want for sale, but either priced for more than I'm willing to pay, and I know they won't come down to what I'm willing to pay, or it's all jacked up and I'm not going to put the dollars into it to make it what it should be.

Yeah, I never haggle on the phone unless the price is ludicrous and the drive is long. I bought my truck through CL and flat out told the dude he was $2k high and I wasn't going to make the drive to even both if he wasn't getting more realistic. I overpaid by about $1k (meaning he did come down $1k in email immediately), but I really wanted that specific set of options.

Sooo... Don't try to weasel someone down on the phone, but don't waste their (or your) time either. In tractor terms we're talking about a hundred bucks +/-....

...and never show up without as much cash as you're willing to spend +10%.

I think that's all very solid advice. My 1650 needed WAY more money than you're talking about when I bought it but I simply didn't know any better. Even though I paid $350 for it, I'm going to be about $2k past that with decent paint. I don't mind it now that I'm in that bed, but I would have passed on it if I had known better at the time.

I'm kinda sorta looking at this one. Don't need it but would like to have the plow that comes with it. Okay the cool chrome caps would be fun. It's listed at $250.

I'm wondering if I can keep what I want and sell the rest for $250. Don't know & won't know till I see it. If I get it maybe I should spray it with water? lol

@$250 with a plow you can't screw it up... That is well below where you can get into trouble.

The plow will be $175 this winter by itself. Buy it. Do not pass go without it. Put a $75 deck under it and its $250 in mowing season all day long. Case in point... I bought a 1200 w/no motor for $50 (on the extreme Lew price) WITH a creeper... I made $400 on it and have a boatload of parts for my other WFs. BUT... I never intended to keep the 1200... There's the big difference.

If it had been fully restored with a new motor and everything was brand new, then yeah, maybe a grand. But good paint doesn't make it a sound machine. The OP said nothing about it being rebuilt. Matter of fact, he said it smokes on start-up. If you are willing to pay $1000 for a nice QL, I have 2 I want to sell you! I don't mean to be/sound harsh, but a grand is way overpriced for any QL in this ones condition.
I did say I'd pay up to $1000 for everything you just said up there..the new motor, new paint, all the mods on motor mounts....basically I meant it would have to look and run like a new machine. Which to me, going to Lowes or Home Depot and looking at a new Cub, or John Deere. I'd be paying 2.5x that amount for a new machine. A new machine that isn't built nearly as nice as the old ones. My old man threw the 1250 I have beside the shed because it started smoking after 20 years of constant use. Now he has a toro with all the goodies, well had all the goodies cause half of them don't work anymore. The cruise control went out, had to get a new power steering pump, the motor already smokes on start up and this is all within in the first 10 years. So yea, the cub he is looking at is watered down. But some of the cubs I've seen watered down don't look half as good as that the one the OP is looking at. But then again, its just picture. Go take a look and decide what its worth to you.

And no, I don't want your two QL's as the one QL I have now is more then enough work now that I have it in a 1,000 peice's.

Going price around here for a running QL in decent shape, but in need of most wear parts replaced is $400-$500. At least that's how deep my lint-filled pockets are.

I also think that for most of us Cubaholics, the only reason we need to buy yet another one is: Because it's there and we want it to be here.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
