I nabbed this "70" last Monday. Didn't really need it, but when people basically give these away I will take them. Came with the deck which actually spins free and has the cast iron corners. They even threw in a plow to sweeten the deal.

She looks really nice and they did a great job with the prep work and paint, but certainly not completely restored. After spending 100 hours or so on my original getting it up to where it is today, $450.00 sounded pretty good for the "70" and not a wad of grease or mud had to be removed

So the wife asked me what I was going to do with it

I told her, in the future, just think of these like a collector series and I only have 25 more models to go.

Smile Deck Size for 70 and 100

According to the early sales lit and mower deck manuals when the 70 and 100 came out in 1963 all you could get was the 38" three spindle pin-on deck. Sometime in 1964 the 42" deck was introduced and at first it was only available for the 100 (38" only for the 70 and 38" or 42" for the 100). Of course as mentioned earlier the decks were sold separately by the dealers and I'm sure that if you wanted a 42" deck for a 70 they would have fixed you up with one. Especially, since to the best of my knowledge either deck would fit a 70.

Default My 70

got this jewel out from under a pine tree sitting in four holes.. Original owner tractor. Came with a Haban sickle mower, 38" mower, 3 point, IH blade, brinly turn plow, and brinly disc. All the above came home the same day with the tractor brand new..Owner added a 10hp that he ordered complete from IH after the 7hp had been rebuilt too many times... got the original engine and paperwork with it to boot!.. too bad the last 20 years it wasn't shedded!

Merk your 70 is amazing. The restore you did on it was great. It looks even better in person.

I believe more often than not mower decks were purchased along with the tractor, as cutting grass was the tractors main function for most people.

At the same time dealers would normally "make you a deal" in some way, like so much for the tractor and then sell you the mower deck "at cost" or the tractor and mower for one money and "throw in" the blade. Very much like buying similar things today, they could/would tell you what they thought you needed to hear and manipulate the paperwork to make it look like you were getting a really great deal.
In 1974 my dad bought a 108 brand new. He got the 44" deck for $1

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
