My 149 has a PTO safety switch , right where he says his is.
How do i know ??? My 149 wouldn't start and i traced to the PTO safety switch. I wish i could get you a pic , it is buried anyhow , so it probably wouldn't show up. |

Page 20 in the service manual shows a PTO Safety Starting Switch in the wiring diagram. Looked up the manual on this site , to lazy to walk out to the garage.

Ok.... my bad.
![]() BUT, again, that is a SYMPTOM, not the problem. Start at the BATTERY and go from there. If it has 6V on BOTH sides.... THAT IS NOT WHERE THE PROBLEM IS! See R Bedell's post #9. The PTO safety switch is only on the START circuit. It wouldn't cause it to die suddenly. |

Yes there is. And when depressed there should be 12 volts on each side with the key in the start position.
If memory serves, the orange/orange & black wire ultimately goes from the "S" on the Ign. switch to the small terminal on the solenoid.

OK....it comes down to terminology and now I can see the confusion. The 149 does not have the traditional PTO switch. It does have a "PTO starting safety switch".
I agree, this safety switch would have NOTHING to do with the tractor suddenly going dead.

OK, no biggie, I won't have to reduce the resolution for pictures. Sorry for the delay, slept in a little (so nice). First thing, gonna check for spark, will report back later.

How do you plan to check for spark if the motor won't crank?

good point. So back to the tests. I still have the ignition switch out, and when I test the molex connector for the ignition switch i get 4+ volts on the "ignition" and "starter" plugs, and 12+ volts on the "bat". I already mentioned 6+ volts on the PTO safety switch. I'm not sure these if these voltage drops would cause a running engine to quit or not. Any thoughts?

I just cleaned up the ignition sw connectors and sprayed some deoxit in the female molex plug, turned the key and now get machine-gun clicking which, I believe, indicates a bad solenoid. Am I correct?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
