I have decided that when I get my 1200 all cleaned up and good looking,I will get me a 782 or 982. I am really taking a liking to the red ones..17 or 19 hp or even a diesel would be really cool...

That's just their way of identifying the 982 as far as options goes. But, the hood still says 982 regardless and a person would still call it a 982 whether it has all the options or none. I'd have to agree with Myron there's no 984/986 it's just a code on the data tag.

I think you would love either one. I have a red 782 and an 1811 (same body style). I'm partial to the 782 because of the color. Excellent gt's and you'd love the smoothness and sound of the twins.

I want a 982. No diesels though. As much as I know how great diesels are....I don't want to need to put another 55gal drum at my house for a different fuel.....and I know gas engines, so.....
My reasoning is for a loader....and poss. backhoe.

Bill-

I've seen IH-built 582 Specials. I think IH started that, and not MTD.

Wild Bill: My references all show the 582S showing up in documents & brochures for 1981 and later. The 1979 & 1980 IH 82 Series documents and publications do not show a Special. Since IH terminated Louisville Cub Cadet production in April 1981 pending the sale in June '81, I conclude that you are correct and that it was CCC which introduced the 582S after the sale. With the 582S and the earlier QL model 1100 having essentialy the same chassis & driveline, it could be that the 582 Special was in the hopper at IH, but I have nothing whch supports any actual IH manufacture.

If anyone has some definitive proof otherwise I sure would like to see it posted....but be careful about those coded publication dates (usually on the back cover)!! My library collection shows those brochures morphed and squeezed the Special in only for 1981 print dates and later!!

I really enjoy how much you all know about these tractors. I've had red and yellow, CCC and IH, and can tell you a little about them, but you all know the nitty-gritty and it's great!

Now, if you want to know about Dodge trucks or corn hybrids, I can help.......

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
