1914 and 986 are the same thing made at the same time (1985 and 1986).

Independent brakes
Electric pto to the back
Category 0 3 point
Onan 19.9 hp (if they were rated at 20 hp, they needed ROPS)

The difference in paint and numbers was determined by whether they were ordered by an IH dealership or a Cub dealership. The garden tractors used the same operators manual. I have an original manual. It lists the 98x numbers and the 19xx numbers on the cover.

My 1914 has approx. 750 original hours. I found it sitting in he all grass where it had been parked for approximately 4 years. Three of the safety switches had failed. The previous owner could not get it started. Still had the chrome baby moon hubcaps on it.

No power steering which is the lacking aspect of the 982's for me....Red or not. That 1914 I found at the auction served me well as a donor. My 1872 is loving the PTO and 3 pt. Show us some pics of your find.

i don't really understand the need for power steering, please explain. My 1810 has very light (not power) steering with a 46" deck. On the other hand, my brand X 16hp Gilson with a 48" deck has very heavy front end and steering that could definitely use power assist. Is the Onan that much heavier than the Kohler M18 in the 1810, or is it attachments other than a deck that require power steering???

Casesc47 welcome to OCC. Lets see some pics of that rare machine you have.

Grand Pops, I love my 982 but Cub should have put power steering and front ports standard on them. I had a JD 420 which I think is a green 982 and they are a nice machine. You just can't beat mowing with a hydro and power steering...gotta have one had free for the ice cold beverage.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
