It looks like someone cut that out to replace the roll pins in the input shaft coupler? All of my 100 series Cubs have some hole cut in the frame in this general area. But it is hard to believe that the 7hp would really do that much damage back there.

Engine got installed tonight...I was a dumbie and forgot my camera... but I got it all bolted down and the wiring hooked up. The control cables are a little stuck so I need to pull them off and loosen them up. Fresh oil put in, need one more peice for the fuel line and should be set to run next chance I get to go out.

Well, engine is officially in. All wiring hooked up, turns over, etc. I tried starting it. NO fire. Played with the points, got fire. No Gas. Opened the jets up and we have gas. Turns over great, but backfires out of the carb. I tried everything...cleaned carb, points set in all spaces and gaps, new plug, checked grounds, condenser. It has wicked fire. Im thinking the engine was put back together wrong. I finally figured out that the points are opening way to early. They are opening when it is coming down on the intake stroke...
So...I think I will crack it open and see how far off the PO was on the cam/crank timing marks

Yes. I noticed as I turned the engine over slowly, the points were just starting to open on the intake stroke. I watched the valves as I was doing this. Im assuming when the PO put the engine back together he didnt get the cam/crank timed together right.

Have you used a timing light or VOM?

Good news! Went out to work on the old girl today in the cold windy Iowa air. Pulled the engine, pulled the pan and stripped it down. It was 180 degrees out of time...but not where you would think. The 70 has that two peice cam with the spark advance weights. The peice where the push plunger rides was not timed with the marks on the rest of the cam. I switched it around to the correct way, put it all back together and it fired on the second revolution. It took a little brainstorming and running through the memory to think of that. I got to drive it. Still need to work on the throttle and choke cables. It seems to have plenty of power.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
