No Cub falls into the "stay away" category.

Quietlines (wide frame, easy to work on) - stay away if you don't want to look for -OR- perform the motor mount upgrade. Removing engine & mount required. Easy / fun if you're into it

Any wideframe - easy to work on. 149 is my favorite worker. Hydraulic lift & lights!

Any narrow frame - cool, a bit harder to work on. Fully capable. Coolest looking!

Hydro vs gear? your choice. Just my humble opinions!

I think it's preference!

I have younger kids- so the hydro stats were a must. I wanted the later electric pto, etc. QL was my choice and I didn't care if it was a 1250/1450/1650.
Yes, they have motormounts to replace..

As a whole- I'd stick with the K-series kohler engine(1 cylinder flat head). So that would probably only exclude the Onan and the B&S 1200.
