CADplans-

Gear drives do not have this gasket.

Methos-

I have never had a problem with installing cork gaskets dry, but I can see where the Permatex would make it even less likely to leak. The gasket has thickness, and a layer of Permatex would be much thinner than the gasket, and consequently the hydro pump might not fully tighten against the transaxle if no gasket is used.

Everywhere I check seems to list the old 721-3004 and new 921-3004 as the same item, and those who do list the 921-3004 seem to show the 721-3004 in their product photo. Check ccspecialties or ihccw. I guess I'll need to make some calls, to find out who's shipping what.

I think all it is a packaging change. MTD has changed a lot of the older part numbers over the years.

I was under the impression the 721-3004 was the original cork gasket, and the 921-3004 was the updated synthetic gasket used in the cubfaq link I posted earlier. Is that not the case?

Doubtful...MTD just has nothing better to do than change part numbers. Most of the part numbers with a prefix beginning in 7 have changed to a 9 over the past few years.

Million dollar question. While I have the thing apart, should I rebuild the brake assembly? The brake does seem to hold the machine on a mild hill, but I do suspect it could be better. Since I never looked at this, and want to order parts today, what am I getting myself into? Best left alone?

Thanks!

Your brake can be adjusted. The manual shows you how to adjust it.
You should be able to see the condition of the brake "puck" by draining the fluid and removing the cover on top of the trans.

Doh! I guess I should have added a top lid gasket to my parts order. Will pull the lid and check the linings this weekend.

Thanks!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
