Guys, what else do I need to buy to do the k341 rebuild that's *not* in the Stens kit on ebay?

I have a genuine Kohler head gasket that I'll use instead of the aftermarket one because I've read that it's much better.

What do I need to do about the governor gear? Mine is plastic, so I think I've read it should be replaced. Any other parts from the gov assembly, or just the gear?

And anything else you can think of. Thanks!

For the governer if the shaft and the bushing is wore it would be best to replace it also. Its looking nice so far!

I'm still considering going ahead and buying a Kohler rod. Matt et al (who have recommended I do so...) is it just the rod you'd be uncomfortable with, or is it the piston and rings as well?

The aftermarket pistons and ring sets I have used have been of pretty good quality as far as I can tell, and I really haven't heard much of anything bad about them.

Both motors I've pulled have not had lock washers on the engine mounting bolts (the ones that go through the mounting frame into the oil pan.)

Given that these things have a propensity to vibrate loose and fall out, wouldn't it be wise to use them?

I talked to the sandblaster guy today, he hasn't come up with a deck to replace my lost 44A yet.

I'm considering swinging a deal with him: I'll take care of getting a new deck, and he'll be off the hook for acquiring one (he has to find a 44A with no holes to replace it.) In exchange, he'll give me free sandblasting on both the 1650 and, eventually, the 1450 projects.

That would mean that I have time to find a good deal on a deck. I may be able to pick up one in moderate to poor condition, and I can weld up holes and whatnot to use on the 1450. I don't intend to make the 1450 so much perfect as solid and serviceable. I have two good spindle bearings on hand from the lost deck, so I should be able to find a halfway decent one to fix up.

If I were in his business, I'd be happy to take this deal. I save him a bunch of time and potentially $200-300 out of pocket, and he just does a quick sandblasting job here and there. And I can get about $300-$500 worth of sandblasting out of the deal.

If I were him, I would jump all over the idea to help you out. The last thing I would want is a mad customer giving me a bad word of mouth review.

I found a sweet deal on paint today. I was quoted $150 for NAPA paint, and that was for 1 pint of one color and 1 quart of another.

While looking for someone local with the PPG Omni line, I found a local paint specialty company. He didn't have the Omni line, but did hook me up with PPG Light Industrial. The whole pkg with 2 qts of paint, 8oz hardener, a quart of primer (etching) and a gallon of thinner all for about $85.

I think that's less than I would have paid for Valspar, and they don't have the yellow in anything but a rattle can.

I didn't pick up the yellow today because he can't do it by codes. I'll have to bring a sample into him later.
