AJ,
I may have a problem (future) but right now all the plates linkages and joints seem to be free and moving easily. That is as compared to when I brought this tractor home the hand shfter was frozen solid in place by rust. Also some of the pivot points were totataly rusted tight too. Those were disassembled and cleaned when I split the tractor. I will try to monitor. I did check the 127 parts tractor that I got, and your right these plates do not move by hand and may be rusted tight on the shaft.

Chris I did my first trunnion repair on my 147 then the 123 and I found out that I needed to add a washer inside of the snap ring that holds everything together, to make it nice and tight.
I read it on here someplace, earlier. But I couldn't get the right thickness washer so I had to file it down to make it work, I think Dave had something on his post, not sure though.
As for your wiring, could you have possibly turned the wires around on the gauge? Does it slightly show charge when you're trying to start it? Because if their backwards it will show discharge when it actually is charging while it's running.

The cub diagram shows that the amp gage positive (+) terminal should have a red wire running from the same terminal that the battery positive cable goes on, on the starter solenoid. Then the green wire from the key switch, the purple from the lights and the gray wire from the Bat terminal on the VR all go on the negative terminal of the amp meter. As I wright that not sure it makes sense??? I rechecked the Battery with the engine off = 12.25 volts, and with the engine running same 12.25 volts, so not charging???
Off to do some research on here for elec trouble shooting.

Todd and folks,
I found the electrical problem!
Thanks to the folks that posted the S/G check in the tech section. I found that the S/G was fine when I grounded the field (F) while running. So that meant the new VR was bad. But man the VR was brand new! Well I took the cover off the new VR and after close examination I found a very tiny wire coming off one coil that looked like it had been burnt off and two other spots that looked like they had arced. I found the original really rough VR from the tractor and looked it over. It did not even have a cover on it! I ran some very fine sand paper through the points. It looked more bullet proof with bigger heavier wires. I did not have anything to loose, so took off the new VR cleaned up the old VR and mounted it. Hooked all the connections up and shorted the BAT to the GEN terminal on the VR for a split second. Fired up the tractor and I have positive charging!
Checked the voltage across the battery while running and had 14 volts! Thanks for all the help!
The Ampmeter I have in now is very jumpy. working, but very jumpy. I may put the old one back in and try it again.
I may have a poor contact in the key switch or the safety switch it sometimes doesn't want to make contact. I think its the key. I don't have the plug I have three separate leads on the switch and they may be loose?

By the way the engine is sounding and running better each time I run it. I also moved the tractor around outside and the work on the trunnion and setting the neutral and the brakes seems very positive. Actually pulled a little wheelie and wasn't really trying!

I really truly appreciate all the help from the members of this site, being patient with me during this restoration of the 147.

I may look for a good used or a new steering wheel center. Mine is very yellowed.
