Why do you think it was like this? Lack of standards that early on? IH didn't expect to sell as many as they did? (I think I remember reading that in one of Ken Updike's books).

Kenneth's quote..." IH estimated its potential sales volume of the Original tractor to be 500 units per year. In the first year of tractor production alone, the Original sold over 23,000 units. IH sold almost 65,000 units"...(John Deere was thinking in 1961-62 "We have got to get some of this market!")

thanks for the insight.... I know IH tried to "save" money by using a lot of stuff from the Cub (I.E. rearend) to save on production costs, stampings, R/D, whatever... I just wonder if they realized how over engineered they were making their GTs.... not like that's a bad thing by any point

Anyone who has owned an Original knows that they are pretty much a model unto themselves. There are several parts that are early 1961 specific on the tractor chassis, and at least one on the engine. The Original's are a easy model to 'mix and match' on, especially if you are just buying Original parts. If the correct police are out, they can pick an Original apart pretty easy. Even the seat spring for an Original is different, than the seat spring from a 70, 100, 71, 72, or 73.

Bill's right on the $$$! I consider myself one of the "correct police", I just like to see things oem when restored. Until the restoration happens anything goes for me I do like the correct decal more than the replacement.

Bill, would the engine part be the s/g bracket? What about the "smooth" cooling fins?? I didn't know there was 2 different style decals for the O', thanks guys

There was also a thing about the rear rims having smaller openings in them, also the rear hitch had a smaller hole in it.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
