The shift collar only goes on one way. Did you remove it? As for the shift yoke, it does not matter, but if it is severely worn it will not stay in gear. The detent may also be an issue, the roll pin hole that is in it may be egged out.

I dont recall which is which but narrow frames and wide frames use the same creeper with the exception of the handle. one is long and one is short. is your handle being obstructed & stopping you from reaching the detent? I just looked at the one I have on the shelf and there is no mid position. when the LEVER ASSEMBLY-POPPET is in the forward (closest to drive shaft) detent in the housing casting it is in a 1:1 ratio. when the poppet is in the rear (closest to transaxle) detent it is in the 4:1 reduced drive ratio. any position that is not in those two detents will not allow for proper operation and may cause damage.
you should be able to confirm the proper engagement from the bottom side or with the tunnel cover removed. if these are confirmed to be in the detents and you are still not engaging properly then there is an internal problem, I would guess the roll pin that holds the "yoke- shift" has fallen out or the "collar shifter" is in backwards.

A 126 does not have a tunnel cover, if he used one out of a wide frame he would have an issue with it shifting as it will bottom out in the slot and will not shift correctly.

basically is your roll pin too long on the COUPLING ASSEMBLY-DRIVEN? or is it not fully inserted in the bore

there is a rolled pin that holds the COUPLING ASSEMBLY-DRIVEN on the input shaft of the transaxle- are you sure this is not obstructing the COLLAR-SHIFTER from fully engaging? the roll pin can not extend into the minor diameter of the gear- this will interfer with the teeth of the COLLAR-SHIFTER and not allow proper engagement.
