Did you adjust as per kohler service manual ( free downloadable here?)
IIRR you can look down the oil fill hole and see if the gov gear is still in position in the block. usually the gov shaft does not fail but the gear does occasionally fail finding it's way in the bottom of the crankcase ![]() It is not unheard of, but not common either. Most times, just a proper gov adjustment solves the problem. If the gear did indeed break and relocate to the bottom of the sump. time for a complete tear down/inspection/repair as needed. |

As near as I can tell I set the governor right. Its acting alot like a k301 I had let go in a 128 a year ago. As soon as the PTO is engaged or the hydro is worked it just falls on its face. It will still try to cut grass but it labors awful hard. I'm convinced that the governor has a more serious problem than adjustment unfortunately. On the bright side I may have located a twin Kohler out of a cyclopse. Might get some ambition this weekend and see if a swap is possible.

I was waiting to ask this until you exhausted all options.
Are you sure its not running on one cylinder?

Soo Dirt pusher, are you familiar with these opposed twins? if not pull one plug wire off @ a time and that will tell you if you only have one lung firing. Also those dam unadjustable wally booger carbs can mimic a variety of power problems. keep the dialog going here, before you condemn the engine. ![]() |

Well she sounds really good to be on one cylinder but I have not checked for spark yet. Regardless of other issues I'm sure there is some sort of a governor issue also. Another thing I forgot to mention is that some one has been playing with the governor before I got to it. All the dirt and grease on everything to do with the governor shows the signs. As far as the carburetor I can make it worse but no better and I can usually get carbs to see things my way. The only thing I'm wondering is if I should set the governor one more time. Honestly I'd be just as happy to sell this to someone who wants to fix it and I'd stick with my single cylinders.

If this happened to the PO he would most likely also think governor and that could be why it is clean and looks like someone was messing with it.

Is the carb the type with the fuel shutoff solenoid on it?

Where in PA are you, how does a rear lift attach to this machine, and do you want to trade some stuff?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
