So many younger people today only know how to work inside the box. If you throw them a problem that's outside the box, and forces them to think, they are screwed. They will sit there and stare at the problem and wait for the answer to magically appear.
I have one daughter that's exactly like that. She's a 4.0 student in high school. We went to get a new battery for her car, was looking at tires, told her she would need new tires before winter. Said here's some that are $40 each. So she said "so that's $120"... um.. how many tires are you going to buy? "ohhhh, yeah, $160" Now my second daughter is the opposite. She's in grade school and full of common sense. She was on the swings at school, some boy walked in front of her and she kicked him. Then while he's on the ground she's yelling at him "are you really so stupid that you would walk in front of the swingset?". In case you wondered, yes, they are now considering removing the swingset because they are too dangerous.
