Well guys, which is it? Engine or PTO? PTO or engine? Hmm...new PTO installed (WITH the spacer, shrew! On a side note, phew
) or an engine with just shy of 1000 hours on it? Or is it the engine with meticulous oil/filter changes that gets blown off/out after every mow or the untested PTO? ![]() Before the big reveal, I want to throw a thank you out to Cadetbob for his help. It made the day go by much better having not only someone to BS with but having an extra set of knowledgeable hands. Plus the couple tools he brought came in quite handy a time or two! Anywho...drum roll please...it's the engine. That was the first thing we wanted to confirm once we got started so we rolled the 2284 into the shop, pulled the new PTO, and violla; PTO still looks good and the bearings turn like new (why shouldn't they? ). I'm not sure if I let out a sigh of relief because my new PTO was still good or I was right about it being the engine but either way, knowing is half the battle and knowledge is power and all that good stuff. ![]() So, we set to work. We disconnected everything from the 2284 engine, unbolted her, and pulled it out. We set that on the bench then pulled the GT2544 into the shop to remove it's heart. After a quick ceremony to thank the GT2544 for it's sacrifice (a cold, frosty ceremony), we started the removal process. Oddly enough, removing the engine from the GT2544 was the part of this I was dreading the most. We eventually got it pulled out and on the bench next to the 2284 engine. The next chapter was swapping all the components from the 2284 engine to the GT2544 engine and cleaning it up. Below is a list of things we needed to swap/do to the engine to make it Super ready (ba dum ba). -Swap oil drains (GT2544 had a stubby drain and the Super had a hose to aid in draining) -Swap exhausts -Swap cooling shrouds And that was actually about it. We drained the oil from both machines, put a fresh oil filter (and oil) on the GT2544 engine, removed all the shrouds and cleaned the engine up nice and 'perty. We then actually swapped carbs between the two engines since the Super originally had a 22hp engine and the GT2544 had a 20hp. We removed the carb from the 2284 motor, opened and cleaned it up, made sure linkages, stops, etc matched up, and installed on the 20hp engine. We also, while it was on the bench, put a new PTO side crank seal in since I think, due to some evidence, the seal in the GT2544 may have leaked a bit (or someone didn't know how to pour oil, idk). Upside: new seal. Downside: it didn't seat the way I wanted it to. We'd find out soon enough... Once we had the engines prepped, we pushed the 2284 back into the shop and (after first installing the engine plate upside down ), put the new beating heart into the Super. Hooked everything up and after a few cranks to prep the fuel system, it fired right up...with a gas leak. It soon died and we noticed the fuel filter was near bone dry. Ugh, so after some digging we found the fuel filter was damaged (from us, from the factory, idk but it leaked like a sieve and wouldn't hold pressure in the system). Put a different filter on it and it fired right back up. Let it run for a few and checked things over and all looked ok...for now.So we finished things up by reinstalling the new Xtreme PTO and hood/grill/etc. Backed the Super out and took it for a mowing lap. All looked good! Cadetbob took it for a lap and then made a graceful exit, stage right. I continued to finish the field...I mean yard...and parked it (that's why you didn't get an update you greedy SOB's, I mowed until 9, had dinner, then passed out ). When I parked it, I noticed our worry was warranted; the new seal was leaking so I guess I get to do that project again...and clean the once nice clean engine up again.So that's it, a nice clean (well, it was) engine swap. We were impressed with how smooth and quiet this "new" engine ran. We found during the swap that at some point, the Super engine had lost a muffler nut which either caused it to run louder or it was running rougher in the first place. The "new" engine handled the tall, thick grass very well. In the end, while I wish this wasn't necessary, I'm glad we got everything swapped and done. Below are the few pics I manged to take during the process (thank Cadetbob for reminding me once or twice to snap a few pics). Hope you guys enjoyed the roller coaster ride!

It is good that the other mower was around to donate its heart. Oil leak is a bummer.

At the start of this, I debated doing a sort of informal write up on the swap and getting some more in depth pics but as luck would have it, that thought didn't come to fruition. Oh well, I'm sure this isn't the last motor swap on a Cub I'll do in my lifetime

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester.
