Have you considered rebuilding it yourself? Just have the shop bore cylinder if necessary, buy the parts and do it yourself. The Kohler's are pretty easy to work on even for someone new. A great learning experience. The Kohler manuals are available online. If you don't have the tools to measure properly, see if the shop will measure and tell you what is needed.
The shop I use usually charges $200 - $250 for bore, hone, cut valves and grind crank if required. The gasket kit including seals can be purchased for $30- $50 for aftermarket and more for Kohler. Hard to tell from your picture , but it does look like the front ( toward valves )is egg shaped which is common.
