Well, Sam got me started on this so, I couldn't stop unless I did something to help prevent this in the future.
Modified the shroud per Sam's picture and added some electrical knockout plugs to the bottom of the shroud so that the stuff can come out as it needs to. I used the foam from an air filter for the cover plates as I didn't want any dirt getting under there, tried just a gasket but that wasn't enough. The foam is glued to the plate just for insurance. Also had the pleasure of replacing the crankshaft seal as well, that was a big reason for the dirt sticking to everything. While I had the driveshaft out, I went ahead and took it apart to clean up that coupling and the 4 steel balls/assembly. Let me tell you now, if you have one of these tractors with that type of driveline, do you and your tractor a favor and take those couplers apart, clean and relube them. Still have a good bit of work to do to get the motor back together and then set it down in the tractor, don't look forward to that tomorrow, that motor is heavy. Getting to old to lift them up out of there anymore. Enjoy the pics you picture junkies................

Thanks Todd,
Here is what I was referring to about the drive shaft joints being nasty. I cleaned them all up spotless, completely repacked them and then pumped grease through the shaft before I reassembled them. Just shown' the dirty pics here........so if you have never done yours, you should get to it to help make your driveline last longer.

Wow. Looks crusty and dry. Mine needed attention after about 5 years from new when I removed the engine for cleaning. I also replaced the o-ring and boot on each joint. Used a zip tie to close shaft end. My 1864 gets about 30-40 hours per year.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
