If the machine only broke one time, replace the parts and go. If this has happened multiple times, then you likely have some sort of issue.
Since you lack experience in repair, posting pics is your best friend. So many times people say that something is correct, but after posting a pic we can see it clearly isn't. If in doubt, post a pic with your question. Otherwise, bolt it together and try it out. Lets not make changing out some simple pieces harder than it is.

OK, the crappy little powdered metal part, #27 with the pin is what the loop on the spring fits over. If your is broken you'll need to replace it. The other end of the spring goes into the hole on the idler arm. Make sure the pivot points are greased, I've never seen one that has been greased and most of them are frozen so they can't move as they are supposed to.
