The adjustable carbs are good for replacing the POS Walbro non-adjustable carbs on the M18 engines. You can also use the jugs, heads, and sheetmetal on the Magnum twins. I usually keep all of that stuff when I junk a blown KT-17 because of the carbs and because sheetmetal disappears for some reason...people take it off and are too lazy to put it back on or something. I wouldn't junk the air cleaners either...they fit the M18s (air cleaner assemblies come up missing once in awhile), will also fit K-series singles with slight mods.

I guess the smart thing for me to do is get an adjustable carb for my 1872. Anybody got one for sale?

Matt,
Yeah, I will keep them. I probably keep more stuff then I need to most of the time! Thanks Allen, Teet, and Sam Mac! |

Matt, Are the jugs and heads the same, or is there some work to be done in order for them to work? And what is involved in the carb swap ? Thanks JOE

The jugs are the same from what I've heard...however, you must use gaskets between the jugs and the block on jugs that had gaskets there, and RTV on jugs that had RTV there...that is the difference. The heads might be slightly lower compression (that's how they bumped the KT-17 up to 18 hp when they made it into the M18), but they will work. All you have to do for the carb swap is bolt it on and go. Some carbs need the hole in the throttle arm enlarged to fit the linkage design on some of the later engines.

Buy another blown KT17, build 1 from the 2, and install a set of 18hp rods in it, and it will be good to go. My Dad has been doing that for years.

I assume he's drilling the rod caps for oil holes, right? You can't use Magnum rods on a series I unless you do that. It'll seize up pretty fast otherwise. I had one engine that someone did that to, and didn't put oil holes in the rods.

That is correct Matt.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
