Unfortunately I don't have too much spare time to devote to this project so it needs to be pretty easy.

Yes the cub has a 16HP B&S

Hello, if you can find a mag 18 out of a Sears/roper it will have a 1" crank. Your pto off the briggs will bolt right on to the motor it is 1". It will be a little long but a spacer will fix that. I know how to fix the other end too. Mike btdt

So the Kohler Mag 18 is the easiest in your mind to do the swap?

So this guy sells a 18 HP Vangaurd as a kit that he claims to be a direct replacement for the 682/782. Don't know much about this series but maybe it's an option. Might be worth looking into.

That's pretty nice that it's a direct replacement but I can't afford a new motor.

Maybe you cqn afford the conversion kit minus the engine? Will he sell the kit separate from the engine?

I was looking but didn't see anything about just the kit.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
