You don't want to do this if the belt is on it.

the bearing might be on the crank too far and when you release the clutch the spring will hit the end of the crank

Some other thoughts comes to mind........Bearing could be frozen/seized. Or bearing might not be "locked" on crank (What Dale mentions brings this to mind!)

Are you missing the snap ring on the clutch housing?

If I remember correctly the snap ring was there.

Here's a couple of pics. The snap ring is there. Double checking with the gauge in better light it looks like I've got the bolts a little too tight.

From the front it does look a little tight, but from the back it looks like just the one (closest to the camera) is too tight.
How about a picture of the end of the crank?

Here's a picture of the crank. The bearing is about 1/8" past being flush with the end. That's not how I remember leaving it. Maybe I didn't lock it down tight enough.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
