Guys, thank you all for your quick replies. You'll see by my Q's that this is all new to me, so I really appreciate your suggestions.

-Sam Mac - thank you for the links to the diagram and the conversion unit. Is the field coil contained within the PTO unit (as shown on the conversion unit), and how do you check the existing field coil?

- Roland - while the reverse switch is clearly labeled on the diagram (#14), the only relay listed is #7 - is that the reverse relay? And how would I check each to determine if they are hanging up?

-Jebow - thank you for the chassis manual link-WOW!! Troubleshooting section extremely helpful. While it says air gap should be set to .017, our PTO seems to run all day - as long as no reverse. Still, will check it out.

-Bocephus - I don't think our 1210 has the hydrolever. The mowing deck is raised/lowered by pulling the lever on the right and clicking it into place.

The lift lever has nothing to do with the foreword or reverse hydro lever.

Field coil is contained on the conversion PTO. You will need a meter to test your existing coil. Often when they get old the insulation in them breaks down, they work for a while until they get hot. I suspect that is why you have to wait till it cools off to re-engage it. The reverse issue is a different problem, that is probably the reverse switch.

Brian - re: the hydo lever, another part of this tractor I have to learn about.

Sam Mac - thank you for the explanation of the field coil. Learned about heat & coils the hard way on a MC. Hopefully this is only the reverse switch, because if I don't back up, it cuts all day.

Roland - thank you for the electric PTO Clutch diagram & adjustments. My 1210 file is growing!

I don't know if this applies to the 1210 or not, but my father had the same problem with his 782D PTO cutting out when going in reverse. I found when he moved the hydro lever to go into reverse, it would occasionally rub on the wiring harness behind the dash and cause a short circuit. Over the years, the insulation was worn off of some wires. The circuit breaker would pop, and engine would keep running. The PTO would no re-engage UNTIL the circuit breaker cooled for a couple of minutes and reset itself.

They were located in the dash right along the slot for the hydro lever.
