Hard to tell from your picture but FWIW, the original snap rings were much thicker and probably a considerable amount stronger than the average hardware store snap rings. Mcmaster Carr has them.
Thanks Mark, that explains it, this was a hardware store snap ring.

I put several wraps of electrical tape on the driveshaft fore and aft of the fan blade, in addition to using the snap ring. I tend to imagine that the tape will kept the fan from 'walking' along the shaft, So far, no problems.

I bought one Cub where the previous owner used a hose clamp on the fan hub. The fan was in one piece, so I guess that worked for him.

I did the electrical tape thing also, I used a new shaft new fan & OE thick snap ring, walked forward anyways. A few wraps of Super 88 stopped that.

Just replaced my fan yesterday and will be adding some tape to it ASAP. Good idea.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
