Sam would a ceramic coating like they use on headers help keep the heat down?

No doubt that would help. I think some header wrap on the tail pipe will do what I need to do. I have a temporary pipe on it at the moment and ran it for a while, seems good. Serviced the engine, then I did a little cleaning on it. First pic shows the warped hood with the exhaust exiting through the grill. Second pic is my temp exhaust. Remainders are after a little cleaning.

looks like a nice machine,is there a way to route the exhaust out the bottom like your temporary pipe is routed?

That's the plan. I ordered a 1-3/8" OD J-bend from Jeg's.

I'll cut it and weld it so that it will exhaust out the bottom. The pipe should be a tight slip fit over the existing pipe from the muffler. Once I get it all the way I want it I'll weld it together.

Not going to happen. For me it's nothing newer than a Cyclops that get to call my place home. Only reason I'm doing this one is to flip it and pick up a few $$$$. Nice grass cutter but that's it. Others will disagree.

Sam,
I agree with your assessment. My 2186 is a good mower but the twisting and rough ride and general lightness of the entire machine isn't up to the old machines and it was never intended to be.
I did as you suggested, I got it so I would have a standby 18hp for my 1864 and have a nice mower in the mean time. It does have a nice tight turn compared to some of my old ones and the deck does a good job.
