I had a similar thing happen; I rebuilt the steering column and couldn’t figure out why it got progressively harder to turn. I unhooked the drag link to find out the left knuckle was real hard to turn. I had to do as Yosemite Sam suggested, put a pipe on it and worked it back and forth while someone sprayed it with Kroil and tapped with a brass hammer. It eventually dropped out. I had greased the zerks but apparently some old grease decided to harden and bind.

Good luck,

Thanks for replies. What I ended up doing is taking the axle out and taking to my buddies press. Was a real bear. Wish would have done it some ways suggested but oh well. Had to rob the spindle from the 126 just to get me by (ruined original) that came out in about 5 mins. Put anti seize on everything

If the spindle was that tight, it wore down the pin in the steering box.

Unscrew that pin (1/2" diameter), reshape it with a grinder to eliminate the "flats"
put it back together.

1/2 or more of the remaining steering play will be GONE!!

Easy-Peasy,, well worth the little time needed to do

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
