Upside down blades are capable of breaking a connecting rod? Really? I don't buy it. How is this any more load on the engine than heavy grass, heavy snow, etc.?

Thanks guys, no progress yet....
sawdustdad...It would work harder because it is trying to lift the tractor off the ground like a helicopter.

I can see how the blades might stop really quick when they would otherwise shave a tree root instead.
But you would think the belt(s) would slip before a crank or rod would break.

If trying to abruptly stop the crankshaft by means of a belt around the PTO results in breaking the connecting rod, I'll be the first to just give up on my Cub Cadet and shove it down the nearest river bank.

Seriously, if that could even remotely be the cause of the connecting rod breakage, then that rod was going to break anyway. Backward blades or not.

Nice 108, otherwise.

Sounds like the general consensus nulls my guess of how the rod broke...

So today I pulled a replacement k241 out of a 70,and cleaned up the dirty engine area,I have a good k161 to re power it.
This is an early production 70,it has a different clutch arm with no notch for the steering column.
It also has a thinner axle, and a different front cast piece.
The T.O. bearing was always quite so ,it will get a new disc, trued up plates and a new teaser spring.

The k241 will re power the 108.
I will prolly have to do the same in it also.

Nice Lew. Nothing like PBR and PB blaster to make the day go by. Cool info on the early 70 too. Wanna share what your brushed on concoction is to make shiny paint? Solvent?

PS don't forget the muffler spacer like you tell everyone else

Well after a few days work, it is back together. New clutch and related products.
Runs and drives very well, I will put a mower deck on it and use for a while.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
