My 982 had 12 point heads as well. Never could figure out the logic behind it. Maybe something to do with efficiency/ease of installation on an assembly line?

As an educated guess..........

There came a point during production, that the normal Hex Head Bolt was running low or were out of, and the (IH or CCC) frantically found a Vendor that could supply a substitute for the least cost. And that is what they came up with.

I am sure, since the Parts Manuals substantiate it, that the original part called for was the Hex Head Bolt.

Didn't all Cub Cadets bolts have either IH or WP (the West Pullman, Chicago area IH factory) on the bolt heads? From what I've read around the early 1970's they removed the IH marking and replaced it with WP so they could sell fasteners without the well-known IH trademark to other manufacturers.
