149 Severe Hydro whine

Does it whine all the time both in neutral and while moving? Since it stops whining when you use the lift I would lean more towards the pressure relief valve, when you use the lift its removing excess pressure from the pump which is what the pressure relief valve is supposed to be doing so it maybe stuck.

yes it whines in neutral and while moving. Im going to double check the neutral, and that sounds like a good thing to check, the relief valvles. I have a couple to swap out.

Tim. Can't be a stuck pressure relief... It would blow the pump. The pressure relief for the lift only opens when the lift exceeds it's pressure. E.G.: at the end of it's travel. There is a second relief for the charge pressure to the hydro feed circuit.

I'm with most of the other guys on this one, check the linkage to make sure it's in neutral. Or just try moving the lever on the dash slightly.

This thing have any leaks? Reason I ask is on here seen several cases of issues just like this. The poster failed to mention a leak only when sitting. A small hole in the filter, or suction line, loose charge pump, bad seal, anything that can suck air, will. Won't leak when running. A suction leak causes the pump to cavitate, and subsequently whine. May have a bad front seal. There's an answer that's not fluid and filter. Although, if it was mine, I'd change the filter just to be sure. They're cheap and easy. (Only after checking the linkage.) Oh, check linkage on the lift valve too. Make sure it's not sticking.

Since he says it whine both in neutral and while moving I wouldnt think its a linkage issue, once the lever is moved out of the neutral position the linkage adjustment doesn't mean anything. I agree with you that it could sucking air either from a leak in the system or low fluid. Yet another reason to start with a fluid /filter change.

I have a similar issue with my 2072 in neutral, it whines fairly loud and even jerks forward, but move the lever slightly in either direction and it stops, so definitely a linkage adjustment issue. I'll get around to fixing it one day...

I guess another question would be how loud is the whining, they normally make a good amount of whining noise during normal operation. At least mine do.

Find the leak, and I'd say you'll also find the source of the whine.

The change the filter and fluid is sound advice in my book. I parked my 149 last fall at about 50deg and it was all good. Put the blade on couple of weeks ago and fired it up (25deg) and it absolutely would not respond to the lever at all. I thought she was done, then I remembered all the posts on here that said change the filter and fluid. It was like magic it moved just like it should. I'm not saying it has anything to do with this situation just that I never would it would make that much difference

If it were mine, the first thing I would do is check the fluid level, then I would move the lever (with the engine running) to see if there is a position where it doesn't whine.

It might be like my ex-wife, except you couldn't shut her off.
