To me when mowing, if you're not on a cub or JD, you're not having any fun. I have no interest in ztr's, unless I could found one real cheap for resale.
Once you go cub, you won't go back!

I am just getting into Cubs, having bought my first one, a 1969 104, two months ago. I used it to mow with one time. It cut great, especially with blades that could use a pass with the grinder. The next time I needed to mow, I gut on my Husqvarna. Night and day difference. The Husqvarna has the 24 hp Kawasaki with the 48" fabricated deck. It rides much smoother than the Cub, it is a lot quieter than the cub even though the motor is almost 2-1/2 times the hp, the deck is much quieter too, the turning radius is much smaller, and with the larger deck, it is much faster. It is a joy to mow grass with.

I removed the deck from the Cub when I put the ags and tri-ribs on it, and likely will not put it back on it unless it has to be used as a backup if the Husky fails. Having said all of that, I LOVE the Cub. I use it all the time. Mostly pulling the small garden trailer that I used to pull behind the JD Gator. Sure, I could have pulled it with the Husqvarna, but I didn't. I see that as a lawn mower. The Cub is a small tractor. I have the three point hitch and lift spring waiting to be installed. Then off to find implements such as a Brinly plow, landscape rake, cultivator, etc. Sure we have large farm tractors that will do all of that, and much faster, but I really enjoy the Cub and can't wait to have the stuff to put it to better and more use.

So, like CADplans, I view the Cub as a working tractor, not so much as a lawn mower. I already have one of those.

Not very often considering that I have 4 Cubs setup with mowers. Once in a while I'll use the BX with the 60" Woods finish mower and the two 60" Swisher tow behinds hooked together. Cuts grass fast!

I"ve used my wife's husqvarna lt1538 to mow with a lot before I started restoring my cubs and have used it few times since cause I didn't want the gas to get stale in it. It's ok no cub that's for sure a probably won't be around in 30 years either. That brings up another stubject. My wife it drives her crazy when I spend money on my cubs she calls them ( lawnmowers) why spend money on a 30 yr old mower?? They break down you have to keep spending money on them . She says we got a good mower to use. I grew up using my 1200 to mow with, we used to farm my family . We lost our farm in 96 and the 1200 is kinda special to me. I won't ever go back to the farm or own full size tractors therefore these are my tractors the 1200 and 1211. Heck I'd love to have our old 656 farmall or IH 1486 or 886 but won't ever own one. So this is my way of living the dream i guess. But like a lot of women she doesn't understand, leads to arguments over me spending money on them even when I do something on the side to pay for it, drives me crazy and pi$$es me off. Sorry for the rant had to vent alittle.

Brian, I know the feeling. Years ago I "NEEDED" to get this video editing software for some project I was working on at the time. The better half was adamant and said we don't need it and we can do without it. Heck, it was only something like $ 59.95. The next afternoon, she's off to the hairdresser and $ 75.00 later she's back home - "how do you like my hair?" IT"S A TRAP!!! You say the wrong thing you've stepped on a landmine! I worked my way through the situation without any problems. We've come to a point where it's either mutual respect or an understanding that we have our own needs, she has hair styles and I have cub cadets. Provided I don't blow the monthly rent on a cub I'm all set. I was even able to talk her into going on a trip for that 1772 from MA to Chicago without any problems....

BTW - Back to the original thread....... I had a problem with my 149 Cub Cadet where it was down until the parts came in. My father in law gave me a loaner to use until I got mine running. It was an Ariens 32" cut mower with the triangle handle that you moved from side to side to steer with - no steering wheel. It was painful although still better than using a walk behind mower to keep the 2+ acres trimmed down.

Weekly I use a cheapo twin cyl Craftsman at my inlaws house and a Cub GT1554 at the parsonage place and either a Cub 2186 or Cub 1440 at my place. My son uses the Cub 1864 at his place every week. He has over 2 acres to mow so he prefers the 54" cut and the power steering. I'll have a Cub 127 with a 42" deck ready to mow very soon as well. I like having plenty of backup for the job.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
