Glad to have you back, CAD! I wondered what happened to you!

Lenovo = IBM... IBM sold out their laptop division to them about a decade ago. "ThinkPads" are Lenovo now.

Those with Windoze newer than XP blues, the free application "Classic Shell" is very light weight (in terms of PC overhead) and can make Windows 8 look 99% like XP or 7. I just installed it on a new Dell with 8.1 on it last week and its flawless.

I'll also add that new Dell, which was a $500 bottom of he line unit, boots Windows to a fully usable state in 13 seconds from total power off. Windows 8 sucks but it's speed is amazing.

Interesting to know about IBM,,,

So far, I really like Windows 8.1, in the right window, it runs Chrome like Win7,,,, so I am happy.

The display is a little "bright", or actually too much contrast, I will be trying to figure that out.

Reducing the brightness does not correct it, there must be a separate contrast control, somewhere???????

8 is rocket ship fast. I'm actually considering installing it on my ancient Athlon 64 system (what I'm using right now) to speed it up. I just detest the gesture controls and "start" menu. It took me 10 minutes to figure out how to shut it off properly. No way the person that laptop was going to was going to handle it!

It's hard to guess where that control might be due to the many various graphics drivers out there, but the simple option in 8, is to type "display" in the search field and see what pops up.

(edit: on the really outside chance that someone else wants to update their ancient 64-bit Athlon machine to 8, it will 99% work under Windows 8, but MS REMOVED support for that family of processor with 8.1.. Thanks MS)

Nice! I always thought Lenovo was the old IBM personal computer line for notebooks etc. I used to have a Lenovo ThinkPad at work and ThinkPad was the trademark for IBM.

I owned a Lenovo once, good computers, especially when they run Mac OS. For what it's worth, UK banned Lenovo due to concerns of backdoors in the hardware. They are made in China. Ricoh just recently moved all their manufacturing from China to Indonesia for the same reason, "unauthorized" changes to their copiers firmware.

That weight set-up is NICE.

I wouldn't fret over hardware troubles. SPY AGENCIES in the UK banned Lenovo, over a decade ago (technology from 2005), not the entire nation.

The ban is only thought to apply to the most highly restricted networks, and Lenovo remains a significant supplier of computers for “unclassified” government networks in these countries.
I doubt my computers meet NSA/MI-6 standards and I'm sure the NSA knows about it!

Yeah I wouldn't worry about it, just something to consider as you make technology purchases, it will only get worse.

i personally made the switch to ubuntu linux probably 5 years ago, and only dip into windows when I have to use a specific program. Windows 7 is pretty good (beter than about half of the other windows garbage I have used) windows 8 is junk like windows me and vista (havn't tried 8.1, and I have no desire)

I work for an engineering firm that is inevitably being dragged kicking and screaming to upgrade (we are still running xp pro)

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
