there is no place to put a ring gear on the flywheel. the ring gear shroud is just a tad larger in a couple spots but should fit in a 149 with no issues. you could probably take a die grinder to the bearing plate to notch it for the starter if there's none there if you don't want to change it and you don't need a stator for charging. you won't weaken it. you will need the shroud with a hump and a flywheel with a ring gear. installing a stator does make for a clean installation. if you are thinking of using an electric PTO make sure the block has the holes to bolt it on.

If you don't use a stator for charging, the only other option is to mount some external battery charging device, such as an alternator. I guess a guy could just have no charging device, and just charge up the battery in the garage between uses. What a hassle. I believe, like Jon already stated, you will have a donor motor that will give you a bearing plate, flywheel, stator, shroud, starter, and possibly even a voltage regulator which you will also need. Like I stated previously, my 129 was converted and it all fits, barely, so it will also fit a 149. From the new engine mounted VR, you will need a single wire to go to the load side of the amp meter.

Matt,
I had to read Don's post twice. Look.

He was saying IF you don't need a stator for charging, not saying that he didn't need one. I read it wrong the first time too.

He went on to say that a stator is a cleaner set up. And, I would agree.

Thing I'm curious about on your 129 Matt is the rod for the PTO. Does it clear the starter? Or did it get modified too?
If it were me, on a 1X9, and I was going to the trouble to change the motor to an AQS, I think I'd just put an electric clutch on it too. Why not.

OK, so you are right. I read it wrong. Sorry.

The PTO linkage clears the starter just as well as it cleared the S/G. The starter is slightly lower and back towards the flywheel a little, but not as much as you may think. The link is original.

I've thought about the electric clutch, especially since this tractor needs to be rewired in some kind of bad way, but the mechanical clutch works great, and if it should ever need to be rebuilt, I would probably rebuild it with the double springs for extra clamp load just for any how. This is cheaper to boot.

Here I am hijacking someone else's thread.

Thank you Guys for all your replies. After doing some research and checking the prices on what new parts are still available. As I have no donor engine and unless I can find some good used parts/another K-321 that needs rebuilt and is set up for gear drive starter, this project is not going to happen. If it does happen you have conviced me to go the stator route. Matthew, hi-jack the thread all you want, this is valuable information. As for the E-clutch. I will pass as I just recently rebuilt my clutch and it has the double springs.

A donor engine could be a K-241, K-301 or a K-321. All have interchangeable pieces as far as these components are concerned.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
