You can't "clean" a governor, and outside of the external linkage and adjustment, they are internal. If the carb is only a few years old, I'd say pull and clean it, drain and clean the fuel tank, new fuel lines, and filter. Make sure the fuel pump works. Then readjust your carb, and check or replace the ignition components. Spark plugs, wires, points and condenser. Kohler and CC called for Champion spark plugs. That's what I recommend and do run. As far as I am concerned, Autolite plugs are only good for a Ford, and even then they suck.

I have had just the opposite experience when it comes to plugs, just my 2 cents but I'll stick to Autolite's, NGK's or Bosch.

In my 55+ years or so of wrenchin', spark plugs spark, if they didn't they wouldn't be in business.
Choose Blonde Brunett or Readhead.
On the points, 99% of the time a little swipe of fine emery or crocus cloth, and adjust properly, and they are fine.
Back when we had points in auto/trucks, ya after 50,000 miles they do get worn a bit but not on these little engines.
Do spend your $$ on air filters & good oil.
A good Gas filter keeps little things out of the carb.
And fresh fuel is good, do not use preminum, the Compression ratio does not require it.
And preminum is just not fresh, with 99.99% of people buying regular,
Preminum just sits in the underground tank.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
