Another angle would be to leave the burden of making it start on them. Since you talked them down to $500 on the basis that they said that it runs, the failure to start might help you knock off another $50 or more. It's up to your judgement and whether you are scared that the engine really is completely shot, I am just sitting here thinking of ideas and hoping that you get a good deal.

Darn you guys, you convinced me to get it! Here she is, coming off the truck. After 1 1/2 hours of a failed attempt trying to get it started, we found a ditch and pushed it on the truck. I will say, cosmetically, she is in really, really good shape. Most of the stuff in the pics is grease or dirt and should wash right off. Next pic is of the ol' girl in her new home surrounded by family I was impressed with how good of shape that hood emblem is, btw. Next is a better pic of the gearbox and rear lift, which I'm more excited about having than the tractor. Finally got one!! And then a quick pic of the tiller

Now for the good and bad news. Good news: Since we couldn't get it started and they've been "trying" to get rid of it for a while (they never advertised it, really), I asked if it'd be worth $400 to have the space back in the yard expecting a $450 counter but she took it! That's the good.

The bad: I couldn't get it started. I was able to confirm spark, but not 100% confirm fuel. I'm going to replace the fuel line on it this weekend, drain and put fresh fuel in it, and order a carb rebuild kit this morning along with a new spark plus wire (the old one is in rough shape for some reason). And finally, and I'm hoping it's just a loose wire or burnt out fuse, towards the end, the key would not make it crank anymore. As this is my first experience with a Quietline, I'm going to have to learn as I got but I do know the starter is good; I used a pair of jumper cables to "short" it to make sure it was still good and it turned the engine over.

So, that's my latest endeavor. This also means I have to find a new home for the 129 so if y'all want it, let me know! Too bad I couldn't convince the g/f to let me keep them all but I suppose she's right, she at least should be able to park her car in the garage over the coming winter

Once running it will be good to know if it is killing the motor instantly or dragging the motor down. Could be nothing more than the seat switch messed up.
Just a thought when checking out things like this. I use a ZEP sprayer to run engines when the carb is in question or need to start a very cold motor with shortage of choke. Or when a carb is empty. Washing down parts. I could go on. lol Very controllable.

you will enjoy the tiller. I see it has belts. That is a big ticket item itself.

Never seen one of those before, looks very useful. And I'm curious to see that as well. I tried spinning the deck by hand and couldn't so I'm guessing it's the deck or mule drive both of which I have extras of. And yes, everything is there (save a few bolts) to hook the tiller up. I'm way too anxious to try it out next year, I've got a list already of work for it to do

Wow! That 1450 is in excellent shape with extras! At $400, you made a really good deal and will be very happy with that cub when you start tilling. Just goes to show, great things come to those who are patient. Glad you made the score and it has found a good home.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
