Thanks, guys! I really cannot begin to tell you how proud I am to have this Cub. It is truly a gem! The PO took very good care of it and serviced the heck out of it. -lol

I'm almost embarrassed about what I gave for it, but I do believe that the PO was pretty happy that I got it, because he knew that it, and it's companion 102, were going to a good home.

Had a few minutes to drop in a battery to to check the electrical system. All the lights work, PTO, and the hour meter runs like a Swiss watch. So... based on the fact that the meter works, and the immaculate condition of the tractor, I would have to say that it is definitely a sub-200 hour machine. Also referenced the serial number and it was built in June of 1980.

I was not able to get the engine to crank. But I did not have time to further investigate that matter. Might be able to look into this coming weekend, but time will tell. Would be great to have a few extra days to attend to a lot of Cub matters...

JimBob: I'm not yet sure what to do with the engine. Obviously, I'm hoping that I can get it to fire. Should it run, then I will leave it as is. However, if the engine is kaput, then I have a Magnum 18 available for re-power. Would not be able to part with the original engine, as it needs to stay with the tractor for historical purposes. I just don't know what the correct scenario would be. Would the intrinsic value of the 782 be negatively affected by dropping in an M18? Probably. However, I would be extremely hesitant to put any money into a Series I KT17.

Jonathan: You are correct. It is a 50" deck. Turns freely, but the center spindle seems to be bad. I will have to investigate further when I pull the deck. Otherwise, it is very clean, but not as nice as the 50" that came with my 1200.

I do hope to spend a little time with the 782 before it gets moth balled. It is certainly not perfect, so I'd like to be able to address the few issues that it has. Especially the engine situation. I will definitely be taking a lot more detailed pics.

BTW... You can't tell from the pics, but the 782 has a replacement front axle that is black. The PO broke the original axle when he accidentally hit a stump.

It's neat that your 782 was built in June of 1980, Steve. Mine was built in September of 1980.

Default 782

Hi Steven, long time no see. Congrats on the museum piece(even though it has a few quirks). I wouldn't think that motor was hurt with just 200 hours, good luck. Mike

Carb cleaner, seafoam, MMO... fired right up at the bump of the key. Might have some sticky rings (fingers crossed), but otherwise ran like a top.

I did a short video and will try to post...

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
