For a rebuild kit, I have had really good luck so far with the aftermarket kits off Fleabay. I have used two so far and have been impressed with how these engines run with them. If it were mine I would get the engine apart, see what sizes your rod and piston are, and order a kit. Give the cylinder a decent honing and you are back in business. If the cylinder is grooved, well, thats a different story.

I was hoping that it might be heat related, clogged fins or out of time. Causing the oil to thin badly; that coupled with an old engine will also cause puffing out the breather.
Probably best to remove the head and see what you find in there.

Well J-Mech you were dead on on your diagnosis the cylinder is scored bad and it is a .030 over engine . I am going to have look in my spare blocks with a virgin bore and go thru it I guess I have one block that has a virgin bore with a broke rod that is the same vintage as the existing engine can I go ahead and swap out cranks if it is in spec clean up the internals ? can I use my old rod or is that a no no

I would go ahead and do both rod and piston. For what little the kits cost with and without the new rod its good insurence to just replace it I have used the ebay kits for 3 engines now and the k301 on my 124 has about 100 hours on it and I dog it hard with a 48 inch deck and tall grass. And she still just grunts and comes to life. I have noticed a little puff of smoke every now and then but its also over due for a oil change.

![]() I have seen the price of the e-pay kits, and I'll be honest, I'm going to buy one! Like cubby102 said, the price with the rod is just a few bucks more. I don't recommend using the old one. It's a no-no. Since they don't have bearings in the rod, it functions as such. Using it over is like rebuilding a chevy 350, but using the old bearings again. Good luck! We'll be here to help if you need it! ![]() |

I had very similar symptoms week before last with my 108. Scored cylinder and worn piston. Being bored and rebuilt.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
