Put a cap/rotor/wires on it. Also, the next time it happens pull the fuel line from the tank and see if fuel is coming out. I really think there may be something plugging it up in the tank. That tank has two outlets in it. One may be plugged and the other is open, so if fuel moved around just right, or there is junk in the tank, it would act this way. I know it isn't fun to pull the tank and lines, but I really think that may be what you need to do. Pull the fuel filter and blow through it if you find it has no fuel moving. It may be plugged up already.
BTW, just "looking" at the plugs probably wouldn't tell you anything if the porcelain is cracked. It should act up all the time, but may not. Plugs are cheap. My money is on a fuel issue at this point. Check your flow!

Have you done a compression check on it?

The compression is 180-185 on all 3 cyl.I already had the tank off and checked the shut off valves when i found the fuel pressure was low and replaced the pump.I did not replace the fuel lines from tank to eng. now i guess it's time to pull apart again. I've had 3 sets off plugs in it since i started working on the tractor.

Are you sure the deck is not binding up? Kind of sounds like it has something that is pulling it down. I know my 2182 also with the 60" Haban will bog a bit when it gets a bunch of build up from wet grass.
If you think the carb is bad I have a good one in the box. Thought I had a bad carb but it turned out to be spark plug issues. Other thoughts, fuel line, maybe the coil is going bad.

if its a late 2182 and its a 6in pto pulley and has a haban deck when it gets turning hard it could bog the engine since the haban was for the 4 1/4in pto pulley

The thing that gets me, is you say sometimes it does it right away, other times it's fine for a perhaps an hour. I'm still leaning towards a fuel issue, but Sam may also be correct. If you don't find anything with either, and you replace the cap/rotor/ and wires and it still has problems. It is possible that the pickup in the dist is going bad. Really, the best way to find the problem is to get it to act up and then do some testing. Play with the deck, check it out and see if maybe a bearing is getting hot and binding. Pull the fuel line, see if you have flow ECT.... It would be really nice if you had some way to check timing. Did you ever notice if the temp was climbing when this happens?

This just has the idiot lights so no temp gauge, if i had specs. i would check the timing but i don't have any book that lists the specs. My books say "see your dealer". I have checked the belts for temp. and even after mowing for an hour they are able to be handled easily,i'll pull pto belt and check movement of all pulleys just to be sure

Also, if you really are running out of fuel, next time the engine acts up, pull the choke out slightly and the engine should pick up at least momentarily. If it does, you have a fuel supply problem "somewhere". Another thought. If you have run some old gasoline through that engine, it can cause sticking valves. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
