Just looked it up on the Cub parts site, looks like the same thing they had on the old 2000 series. Those used to work just fine. My guess is the dealer put the belt on wrong.

Did it shred the belt on the deck or the belt from the tractor to the deck?

Well considering that the pulleys are fixed in place my guess is when they put the deck on it they didn't get the belt installed properly. Not much else to go wrong with them and all in all if they are set up correctly they are pretty good.

BTDT I shredded a $40 belt on my 682 when I first got it. Didn't realize the belt needed to straddle the front left lift point before deck was hung. Made 2 passes and belt self destructed. X2 on the dealer not having the belt routed correctly.

Dealer error seems like the logical conclusion. They did put the deck on (BTW its a fabricated deck and looks VERY stout). I really wanted to like this tractor and I'm trying to be fair-minded and rational. However, there's just something about having an expensive machine crap out on you the minute you get it home that, well... makes it hard to love. Thanks again for the thoughtful comments gents.

I've got a GT2544 with a similar setup on the PTO belt. I've got 150ish hours and shredded one PTO belt and that was due from mowing a hayfield and buildup on the deck... The brush hog was down at the time, but it had to be cut. Other than that, it should be idiot proof... but some things aren't.

OK now I'm bummed out again (based on gcbailey's comment). I was told that since this is a GT not an LT it was suitable for much more heavy duty jobs, like field mowing (which I did for years with a JD that was half the size of the 2100) If build up on the the mower deck can cause this I'm going to have huge issues. I need this mower for mowing around the sides of a 6 acre vineyard (and my front lawn). Its not super rough but there are areas where its steep and the grass may be 10" tall by the time i get to it. I will always have build up on deck. Maybe this is the wrong machine.

Here's what I intend to mow with this 2100. Not inside the vineyard but the lawn and areas up front. The belt broke in the area by the picnic table (seems pretty mild). I have a nice Rears flail mower for inside the vineyard and other really gnarly stuff. Am I asking too much of the 2100?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
