It isn't about a Cadet, rather an MTD Yard Machine. For the last year, I could barely stand to be outside when the neighbor was mowing his yard because he lost the muffler off his 17.5 hp B&S, so he was running stright out the exhaust hole, no pipe/muffler of any kind. His yard always looked horrible might I ad. He parked it outdoors, never cleaned the machine up. Tried to start it for the first time this spring and had a horrible knocking to it. So he went and bought a self-propelled walk-behind. I asked for the mower and he gave it to me. Oil covered due to dipstick tube rubber grommet leaking. I checked fluids and put a quart of gas and there she blows...I mean runs.
Only 2 of the 4 engine mounting bolts were installed, and only 2 or 3 of those threads were in the crankcase. When I realized an ant colony had made this machine home due to the moist grass and cover, it got rolled out of the garage. Engine got pulled, along with other small items I can salvage, and it got wheeled down to the junk guy down the street...he loves to see me coming by the way. The engine mounting holes in the frame were so worn so bad, I was able to stick a 3/4" bolt down through it. Been loose for quite a while. One of the blade I had never seen before. Completely turned over, twisted, on itself like spiral or Rotelle pasta noodle. Must have hit something pretty hard....a couple of times. Got a free B&S engine out of the deal for 30 minutes worth of work.

Getting back on topic----
I bought a 147 from a minister that exploded the bearing on the front PTO. Blew it apart so the PTO when out of the machine and he couldn't mow with it anymore. It was so bad it needed a complete overhaul, with the throwout levers included. (I think the fiber button wore down and he kept adjusting it to where the lever contacted the fingers and that was the end of the PTO.) Mower deck had holes, needed a wheel bracket welded back on, a muffler, and a tire. The PO loved to fix holes/problems with duck tape. All of those contributed to the selling, motivated by his wife, but I think the PTO not functioning anymore was the biggest motivator. Either way, it works for me!

went to look at a cc original that the owner had just replaced the SG on.
he tried to start it for me but no go, it would spin but not start. we agreed on a slight discount and i bought it. next day i go to trouble shoot the engine and as i am attempting to spin it over i realize its turning backwards. i happened to have a spare SG from an original, replaced his with mine and she fired right up. after fixing some of his other work it became one of my favorite yard tractors. This 3165 (on the left) had (2) $1.50 diodes fail in the ignition circuit. I bought it for the fan assisted bagger that is imposible to find for the 3000 series. It runs like a top now....them Vanguards are growing on me.
The 3205 (on the right) needed the cooling system flushed because it was over heating. It had less then 25 hours of run time and was in pieces when I picked it up. The Kawasaki engine runs flawless. Picked each one up for $400.

A neighbor and his buddy were working on his 1810. Something on the engine. Anyway, the engine locked up. A very nice tractor. Never spent a night outside. He gave it to me.
'Nother deal. Got a 129 from a dealer. clean as a pin and never spent a night outside or in the rain. Had a new replacement Kohler on it but a broken rod. All it took to fix it was a new rod. I think I gave $100 but that was a long time ago. I still have it. |

This wasn't exactly a sweetheart deal, but I'll play.
Bought my 149 from my Dad for $250 (with 44A, plow, rear AGs, and chains) with a blown up hydro and worn out rear from about 2000 hours of use and running ATF in it. I scored an entire extra rear that is in great condition for $75... Not bad for $325, but some of you guys are just LUCKY!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
