Also, the 482 wasn't a vertical shaft engine - it was a horizontal shaft. It had a drive shaft back to a 90 degree angle box on the Peerless 4 speed transmission. BTW, that was the set up for the 582 Special, while the 582 had IH's 3 speed cast iron rear end.

The 182, 282 and 382 were vertical shaft lawn tractors, while the 482 might have been considered a lawn & garden tractor, though you will find most Cubbers will NOT categorized it as a garden tractor. Same with the 582 Special. (which may not be IH, I'm not sure on that one)

I thought the 482, 582, 682, and 782 were all the same chassis.

I see now. The 482 had a B&S 11 hp, with a different trans than all the others.
It must have been a cheap version.
But the WB, Width, and overall length are standard WF.

IH wanted a cheaper tractor to sell to appease the Sears, MTD crowd so that's why they made the 482 and 582 Special. They actually started a few years earlier with the 1100. To keep costs down, they used a Briggs engine instead of a Kohler and instead of their own 3 speed cast iron transmission, they used a Peerless cast aluminum 4 speed transmission, the same transmission that's been used by JD and others for years. This transmission was belt driven, so IH ran a drive shaft back to a right angle gear box, and then place a belt from that box to the pulley on the transmission. I heard you can take a 482 (or a 1100 or a 582 special) and swap an IH 3 speed rear in it by getting the proper drive shaft, etc.

Well if anyone has a 482, 582 special or a 1282, I've got a 582 that I'm looking to trade. I have 2 582's and I'm looking for a red model that I don't already have. I would also settle for a 782.

AJ

btw, I have two 582's, one 682, and one 982.

Actually Myron, you are wrong. the 986 was a full size tractor and not a garden tractor. it had roughly 115 drawbar horsepower,3 pt., 3 sets of hyraulics, 8 foreward speeds and 4 reverse plus torque amplifer and most featured a ROPS cage instead of a ROPS cab with windows the tractor was produced in the late '70's until the 88 series of tractor came out, and I believe at the time it was when Tenneco bought out IH and was merging it with J.I. Case.

Sorry guys, not to put fuel on this fire...but there was a 986.
It seems to be a 984 with the front hydro outlet. It's not IH, it's CCC.
Must have come out when the Co. changed ownership.

Myron is still correct. The code on the tag reads 986, and it denotes rear PTO and front hydraulics (IIRC) but the tractor still says 982 on the hood and is still a 982...

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
