Default update on shifting problem

so i took the advice gave and opened up the top of the trans to see what gives with the shifter not working in first or reverse. turns out massive rust on the shaft that has to move forward/back to allow shifter to work. so half a can of penetrating oil and some creative tapping on a vise grip clamped to the shaft with a chisel and hammer, and its freed up and working good now. i didnt see any major problems other than the rust. the fork was bent a bit but i squeezed it back with the vise grip to match the other side.

should be ready to rock and roll when the storm clears in three days.

i drained the rear end and need to know what fluid you guys use in them. looks like vanilla milkshake with all the water in there but smells like old 80w90.

whats the correct fluid to use??

anyone know where to get a throwout bearing thats not 30+ dollars? would a front wheel bearing with a 5/8 id work or would it not be strong enough for the application?

thanks for the advice and support guys. cant wait to get this puppy up and running to its full potential. unfortunately i have too many cubs so if anyone can help me find a new home for it that would be great. ill list it for sale but not till i get everything working again.

The Fluid in it was most Likely IH Hy-Tran... it is still available at your local Case/IH dealer as well as CC dealers. Some people swear by it, I have been using stuff from my local hardware/farm store, and it seems to be working just fine. It says it has the same "water encapsulation" properties as the Hy-Tran for about half the price. The choice is yours.

$30 is pretty much as cheap as you'll find for a throw out bearing.

Lets not turn this into a for sale listing. If it's for sale it will be in the for sale section until then it's not for sale.

Wow, that's pretty rusty in there. Glad you got it all cleaned up and working well!

Whatever water/oil mix was in my original transmission had a heavyweight oil smell to it, and was THICK! Had to clean out a lot of the gunky mess with paper towels.

Sounds exactly like mine! Think ill put hy-tran in it since that's what most people are using.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
