Do you have a multi meter? If so, Need to do some volt drop tests to find the culprit. A fluttering solenoid could be many things but inputs and out puts need checked. Not too bad to do. Volt drop test will isolate if its control or power circuit and then you can narrow it down to take the guess work out of it.

Also check the 3-wire harness connector to the ignition switch. These CAN and do go bad and can be sneaky to catch - take it off CAREFULLY and make sure that the 3 wires are not corroded at the connection point and that the plastic head of the socket is not burnt/cracked/broken from 40 years of use. I have had bad sockets on my 105, 147, 782 and a corroded wire on another that put up too much resistance to send proper voltage and current to the soleniod.

Thanks Alvy:
Looks like I'm going to learn more about using that multi-meter. When I get it back up and running I'll know more about the tractor than I knew yesterday.

Smile Started - now to see if we can repeat it

Okay, so 6+ months later I decided I was going to give the tractor one more assist with a jump start from the car before calling for help/service. Pushed the hydraulic buttons down, shoved the tractor out of the barn hooked up jumper cables and it turned right over. This after nothing but clicking selinoid until then. Ran it for about 90 minutes and put it back in the barn. Battery test 5 volts after several days on charger, yup dead-er. New battery goes in tomorrow and we'll see if it'll run like new. Sure was nice to be mowing.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
