I have to agree with Sam Mac the M and KT motors are obsolete unless you have a good one to start with then there ok but im not a big kohler guy I like briggs. You can also try finding a briggs flathead to repower also, I did that with my 1862(not that hard) and besides for the fuel line issue I have not had a problem with it and it runs the 50' deck just fine, but the final decision is up to you

Thanks guys for all the input and advice. I think I'm going to go with the briggs engine due to the availablility. All the kohler magnums i find on craigslist are vert shaft. I may have found a donor with a briggs vanguard. I'll keep you posted.

Does anyone know how the hortizonal shaft opposed twin briggs fits the 782? They look exactly like the m18's

I've had one...was not particularly impressed. Really dumb carb and intake manifold design, breathers that can't be repaired, starter that collects dirt, and shrouds more difficult to remove and install than most any other engine I've worked on. They're harder to work on than a Magnum or KT IMO.
