Default The 149 is my Favorite

Mr. Bob,

The 149 is my favorite Cub. Everyone has their model preference for various reasons - regardless, they are all tough little tractors. You can't go wrong for $100. Let me put it this way - if you dont want it, I'd buy it; site unseen.

I found a basket case 149 that sat for years - these things are never to far gone to fix and restore. I completly went through mine for about $2,500.

This video is a quick look at my 149 restoration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QwBpD...=ULeDR844tcRLE

The 14hp Kohler is a tough engine - easy to work on. You'll find all the manuals right here on this site. Check out the sponsors for parts. Write me - I have plenty of sources. This video is my engine start after a $250 overhaul:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hiun0...hannel&list=UL

After restoration I put mine to work - and they do alot more than just mow!
check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z9ocCWT70wk

You'll find we're all pretty proud of our cubs here on this site. Their awesome little machines. The only caution I would give someone new is this: Its hard to stop at just one! Welcome

BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT!! 100 dollars is a great deal, and by the sounds of the symptoms of it's failure to move, it'll be a relatively cheap fix.

Thanks for the warm welcome and to the many replies. Going back this evening if my friend and his truck are available. Will be hard to load as the mower deck is on the ground and no hydraulics to lift it. May be able to take the deck off if I can figure out how it hooks. Tractor has not had good maintenance. I checked the oil and it was coal black. Also a hydraulic line is unhooked going in to the pump. Guess where some one was checking for fluid. Thanks again for all the replies and have a great day.

Looked at your videos. Looks like you do excellent work restoring tractors. I could never do as well. Too Old and too few resources and knowledge. If I do get the tractor, don't know how to post pictures but maybe some one could tell me how. I am sure I will have a lot of questions after I start working on it. Have a great day.

AJ
you know that's right sorry bob for the wrong info... my 149 does have the solid pin and my 1200 has spiral pins, hate to derail but anyone know the reason for that?

Also bob you will find that the deck is pretty easy to disconnect it's just 2 u shaped handles on each side just in front of the rear tires that pull out and twist to keep them out and the deck will then come down then just roll it forward off of the front hangers! All left to do is disconnect the belt and MUSCLE it out

don't forget the camera and hope you get lucky and it's still there!!

I paid $260 for my 149 that would run, but wouldn't drive. I replaced the hydro fluid and filter and it was fine. I also replaced that drive pin after it broke. Most work on these old machines is pretty easy.

Wheelweights can put up a short life on the pins too, if it once had them. Well,... Mr.Bob, if the motor runs and the S/G is good, you realy cant go wrong for a 100 bucks.

With a die hard group of IH Cub Cadet loyalists here at OCC, you will have just about all the help you need to get the 149 back up and running. You already know they just dont "mak'em like they use to" .

Welcome to OCC!

Angry 149

Went to pay the man for the tractor and he backed out of the deal. Said that he was retiring next summer and wanted to keep it to have something to work on. What a bummer. Will have to keep looking. I really wanted that tractor.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
