I'll start out offering 300, but I think he wont sell that low at rummage sale start. Need to be there right away to hear it run, my experience at rummage sales is they dont budge much at start of sales--but
if I wait to long , it will be gone

ANother question, could carbon build up (piston slapping on carbon on the head) cause knock?

Could I tell by listening, any signs I should listen for?

If the engine was that carboned up, the valves probably wouldn't seat and it wouldn't hardly run.

I'll preface this by saying I've never heard a knocking Kohler, but I have heard a few cars and larger tractors...a rod knock is deafening compared to other vibrations and rattles.

If it runs and has the knock, what other things should I listen/look for?

Lots of blue smoke would mean a rebuild in order,
I guess how loud the "knock " is is going to be important

Not ever heard one on a Kohler, so I'm curious

That sure is easy on the eyes! Offer him $450 for everything. I wonder if the ISO's are worn and it's the cradle rattling on the frame that is making the knocking noise. There's several things that could be making it knock besides the motor. If it's close to you go check it out you might find a easy fix. I bet most people won't go look at it due to the knocking.

the muffler box could be loose and slapping around...or the spring between the side panels missing and those are slapping on the grill piece. or could be an engine knock. only way to find out is if you get it. its all restored, looks awesome. itd be worth putting some money into. id say get it. offer $400.

My 108 has an IH snow thrower already. It being a wide frame, would this snow thrower also fit the 1650?

I seen that one on CL, it does look nice. I paid a heck of alot more than that for one that's original, and it has a bad engine. So at the price it's not bad.
I've gotten prices from $1200 to $70 an hour plus parts for a rebuild, do you know anyone down by you that has a good reputation as a rebuider?

I havent had to get an engine rebuilt yet, but my dad knows guys who can tinker pretty cheap on small engines. If I get this thing and its really the motor-- I may have one of them work on it. nothing to loose I guess

Well I went and talked to him and drove it
Beautiful Cub. It has bad ISO motor mounts in addition to the knock.
I know that because when I was feeling for the motor mounts he told me they were also bad

He bought this last fall, and the knock developed since then. He was also quoted $70 an hour just to tear into it to find out what wrong.

Rebuilder suspects a rod, but wont know for sure until torn into it

He is just cutting his losses at this point and wants a good running second cadet

I am calling some rebuilders I know for quotes on 16 hp rebuilds. I will need it in addition to motor mounts

If it is the engine that's knocking..It's the rod. You wouldn't necessarily need a rebuild..but a new rod, and maybe sanding to the crank (or a complete new one, if there is a lot of damage).

I have a set of ISO mounts, with less than 60 hrs on them. If you are interested, PM me.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
