I am also a fan of the 782 - nice tractors. Looks to me like it's got a homemade hood hinge on it - this may mean that the aluminum nose piece is cracked where the hood hinges. Whenever you settle, we want more pictures!

The 1282 looks like they did a quick paint job on the wheels but other than that it looks original to me. Plus it looks like its an early one and might have a cast rearend in it. I'd buy that 1282 over that worn out 782 anyday. But that's me !

I'd go for the 782, as well.

If you decide to buy the 782, i should have just about all the sheet metal parts you need to fix it up.

I'm located in southeastern indiana.

AWESOME!! I decided on the 782 and for $400, I didn't think it was too bad of a deal. It has been used well, but the engine is only about 5 years old and sounds very powerful with a 50" deck. The PO has done some unique mods, like a kill switch homemade hood hinge, drilled some holes in the fenders, etc....mostly sheet metal work--so I'm definitely glad to hear that you have these parts readily available. I'm going to the Portland, IN Swap Meet (Portland Fair Grounds-site of Tri-State Small Engine & Tractor Show) this May 16th-19th. Let me know if you plan to attend.

Thanks everyone for your input. I'll post pictures when the weather here clears up.....stay tuned.

Here are some pics of the 782...wow, that is a fast cutting cub! The first picture shows some paint that flakes off easily--probably repainted at some point with some rattle can paint without hardener.

It's going to take some time to put this back to a reliable cub.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
