Thanks for the photo, that tells me what I need to know. I'll probably have to do the same. How did you cut the tray? I assume that you installed the heat shield later on? I got the material from McMaster, item number 6175K828. I cut it on a scroll saw and sanded it. Wear a mask if you do this. Plus the cutting ate one blade per shoe. Where does the negative battery line attach on the engine? Was it marked on your new engine or did you guess?? |

I cut the tray with a sawzall. I hooked the Neg to one of the starter bolts. I had to modify the heat shield because the one for a Mag 18 sits about 2" too far away from the air inlet. Used part of one from a 2160 that I had laying around and part of the plastic boot also from the 2160 to fill the space between the original heat shield, PITA but it came out nice. Had the muffler heat shield made at a local welder and bought a muffler from Cub. They are proud of that muffler.

The motor finally arrived. Now I need to figure some things out on it. I am asking owners of Command Cyclops tractors for help. The first picture is with the lower heat shield. Does the normal setup have this large of gaps between the heat shields, especially on the left side where the gap is over an inch. The second picture shows the PTO mounting area. Kohler machines the area where the PTO bolts mount. But there are four areas that are not machined and stick out over an 1/8 inch forward. I am pretty sure I need to cut these off. The early serial number 1864's use the same old style PTO as I am using. (Not the big frisbee style ones used on later serial number tractors). I added one generic picture of the motor. I think all new motors have a certain appeal.

Gap on the lower heat shield looks normal. Yep you’re gonna have to cut the un- machined area on the front of the engine. Get the sawzall out only takes a couple mins. Your also going to find out that the nice big dipstick tube will hit the exhaust pipe. PITA but a ball peen hammer will fix it just hang onto the tube tight. I tried to get the tube out of the engine for about an hour and gave up and I was not about to pull the front cover.

Frank that will be a nice setup when your done.. I still have not completed my 1541 project as always something comes up.. working on my 317 for now...

I forgot how the fuel line goes from the tank T to the inside of the frame. Each way I try seems to twist the hose funny. I am probably missing something silly. I am starting to get goofy working on this thing.
I ran into two interesting problems. The EFI fuel pump hits the frame rail. I had to make a bracket to move in up one half inch. The bolts that attach the drive shaft joint to the engine mounting part need to be longer then the old ones. Even the parts book is wrong. Mine states the they only need to be 1.75" long. This only catches one or two threads. I put in 2.5" since that is what I had around and too long is not an issue. I pick up a drive shaft Monday and the muffler is on the way. It appears that Cub actually produced new mufflers for the Command powered Cyclops tractors. I always assumed that they did not produce new parts for the Cyclops. This may be a good sign that they will continue to support us die hards. More pictures on Monday. |

Muffler for the CH is available from Cub upper heat shield is NLA. This is how I ran the fuel line on one of my Supers hope the pic helps.

I have another dumb question. Where does the tail light wire run by the fuel tank. Above, below? I need to take more pictures when I take these things apart.

Tail light wire runs along the frame and comes up next to the trans dip stick tube, at least it does on my tractors.

Latest update. First, thanks to the people who helped with pictures of their tractors. The engine is bolted in and the tractor is 80% put back together. I am waiting on the muffler from Cub. "It's in the warehouse" , where it appears to have been for a week. They sure can be slow delivering a $230 muffler. I made another discovery. The ends of the drive shaft on the 1864 are smaller then then the 1541. My old shaft was 3/4 of an inch end to end. The 1864 is on notch smaller on the ends. So I needed new drive hubs.
On last dumb question. Which way does the upper heat shield face. Does it bend over the battery or the air cleaner. I got some parts from RF Houtz. Nice people to work with, plus it is fun to go through their Cub bone yard. |
