It was 20 years ago I did mine (1X8) and I think I remember buying a later model deck that used a 5/8" belt.

Using the 5/8" belt on a 1X8 forced the belt to "ride high" in the pto pulley, in effect "converting" the pulley size, and the blade turned much faster.

In other words I used a larger pto pulley rather than a smaller deck pulley.

It was a "cutting machine!!" until I got my 1872 and 60" deck. The 1X8 was then retired from mower duty.

I ended up with an overdriven deck when I swaped the M12 Kohler with a 4 1/2" PTO in my 1210 to a 16HP Briggs that had a 6" PTO on it. Cut's wicked now.
