IIRR it is not a fuel line shut off, it only stops the fuel from the main jet so the motor does not "diesel" or run-on when the ignition is shut off.
(really needed on a gen set)
You will still have a flooded crankcase if fuel pump is bad or float is stuck.

You will probably need to use your gov. The tag on the gen eng said 1800 rpm and the tractor engine probably turns 3600. The fuel shut off is more trouble than it's worth. Just put a shut off valve in the line. If it was my engine I'd stick a new gov gear in it. They make a mess when they fail.

Finally got the 782 in the shop, and tore apart. it's not pretty. The good news is I was able to polish the crank and it is fine.

I will use the cases, rods, pistons and one cylinder from the generator motor, and the crank, cam and one cylinder from the cub motor. That will make one complete motor.

Pics;

It looks as if my "rag" joint was way out of wack? I wonder if that caused enough harmonic distortion to cause the failure.

Whatever, whats done, is done. Just have to fix it.

That rag joint is pretty bad but it wouldn't have made it throw a rod...the forces from that are far lower than what the rod experiences by running the engine. Was it low on oil? That broken rod looks like it got hot.

It is possible it was low on oil. I did not check it the day of the incident.

I want to believe I checked it when I installed the snow thrower last fall, but?????

Yes I must admit, looking at the damage, I am second guessing myself.

That looks like a low oil run. Look at the dark spot on the rod just above the break.

not to "dog" you on preventive maintenance because I have been guilty of it my self but it looked like the motor has or had an oil leak and it caused a build up of oil and grass. That being said it might have run low on oil from the leak(if there was one) and all the build up it got hot and broke the rod. I for one cant stand to see a motor that I have get that dirty not only will it run hot but i just dont like to see all that mess. It also makes working on it a longer job than what it has to be. Again not to sound like I am degrading you for this but that could have contributed to some of the problem.

Regardless of everything or not it still sucks that it blew up some times these thing just happen for no apparent reason. Hope you get it fixed and back up and running as i will be watching this thread

Nice 782 by the way

No, you are spot on. I was feeling very ashamed of myself, while pulling the motor out. That is why you have not seen me "bashing" the Kohler motor or Cub Cadet.

I own this one, it's on me.

Only thing left to do now is get some parts ordered, and start bringing her back to her former glory!

Your not the only one that has let an engine get nasty. The PO's of these did the same thing. My pressure washer has gotten a workout.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
