Default Well....

Even for ME, this looks more like parts than a project. Got it home off the trailer and under cover (probably for the first time in decades) by myself. The engine looks decent, not locked up, but I don't see where any ID plate or SN is. has the 3 point hitch and the fenders are ok. Trans shifts smoothly (though the thing doesn't run of course.

Came with a deck, and hangers of some vintage... hooo what a mess.

Any ways to ID the engine , since we know it's a QL vintage?

John the Junkman

PS: It WAS fun to get on the 123 and use it as a towtruck...

Upon further analysis of the photos presented as exhibit a,b,and c
Photo A shows that the frame has been modified to fit said engine,QL
Photo b shows the suspected 3 point hitch, roundy fenders.Missing the correct starter button, which leads me to a QL
Photo c shows frame has been cut and the dipstick comes out the side of the block like a QL.Hence the funny s/g mounting.,engine may be a 14 or 16 hp.
In the broader scale of things Cub Cadet, you should part it out,or find a umolested frame and move everything over to it.Then find the correct motor, wiring, and s/g.

I'm thinking you're right. There's not much good on this other than a lot of parts. The engine is probably good... can feel compression and it turns freely.
Dunno how to determine 14 of 16 hp, but it IS a big engine, that's for sure. Frame is notched , which I knew about.

The key switch is 3 posn...off, run, start....

Definitely some Budweiser engineering on this one!

If it was yellow and white I'd be in better shape! The mutts that find me seem more rusty than anything else!

Yea this looks like something I would drag home too!
Slight P.O. mods are expected on these older units.
Nice find on lots of good parts. And they can always be brought back with enough time and patience.
Regards,
Chris

count the number of head bolts. if it has 9 bolts it is a 10 to14 hp. if it has 10 it is a 16hp

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
