Ugh...sorry, so used to my hydros. Your new, and I'm slow...hehe.

Its obvious though to get that much water in there, there must be a seal failure or something letting the water in...I dont know how much I would trust a shifter boot either, especially if a tractor is stored outside, with a tarp or not.

Excellent idea, I make most of my gaskets myself as well, saves a ton of $$, and time trying to find replacements. This would be a good time to fix up the brake puck and replace the o-ring in there as well. Have fun, I know how rewarding it can be

Default 582

Hi 4 speed, You will want to pull those axel housings, that's where all the gunk builds up. I have a 582 with a cast rear that i havn't ever opened. Are those fine spline axels in yours? The carrier looks like the heavier cast one. Mike ( PS Oops i posted this while reading page 1, still want to know if those are fine splined axels. Thanks

sorry I dont know if they are fine or not. about the carrier, I called the cub dealer to see if they had the gasket for the cover. I gave him the S/N from it. they had it . so I drove over and it wasn't the right one. I had a pic on my cell phone ,and showed him. he went back to the computer and grabbed another gasket. and said , this one is for the 582 special. thats the one that fit it.

I thought the 582 and the special had the same carrier. I guess not.

The picture you posted of the rear is not one on a 582 Special. The cast one shown would be a 582,unless it was changed in it's lifetime.Does the hood have a 582 Special decal? There is no breather on a gear drive, the water prolly got in through the shifter. The 124 I just picked up has a froze up rear too, waiting for my block heater to come in the mail to defrost it,then I will do what you did.

I know it's not a Special, and no Special on the decals.

maybe the the guy pulled up the wrong gasket form the start.

gasket # IH-350837-R3 I google it , it fits a lot of models.

does that model use a brass breather element like on a 82 series hydro? Is it still there and in good shape?

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
